The qualification (qualifying tournament) of the 13th World Volleyball Championship for Women took place from June 27, 1997 to March 1, 1998 with the participation of 48 national teams. 15 trips to the final tournament of the world championship were won (6 - from Europe , 3 - from Asia , 3 - from North, Central America and the Caribbean , 2 - from South America , 1 - from Africa ). The team of the host country, the national team of Japan, is exempted from qualification.
