Sports career
During his college years at Edwardsville, Illinois, in 1983, Robert Seguso was elected a member of the United States symbolic amateur singles and doubles. In the same year, he and Ken Flack won the National Student Championship ( NCAA ) in the second division. At the end of the year, Seguso and Flack already played in the professional rank and in December reached their first final of the Taipei Grand Prix tournament.
The next season, Seguso began by reaching the finals of the Challenger level tournament in Amarillo, Texas . Together with Flack, they achieved much more noticeable successes, having won six Grand Prix tournaments and won the right to participate in the final tournament of the year according to the World Championships Tennis (WCT) , which they also won in early January 1985 , winning the double ( at this point) the owners of the trophy Gunthardt and Tarotsi .
In addition to the WCT final tournament, Seguso and Flack win seven more tournaments in 1985, including the US Open , and by September, Seguso is in first place in the doubles ranking of tennis players. In November, at the Masters tournament , the final tournament of the year according to the APR , he and Flack lost in the semifinals to the Swedish pair Wilander - Nyustrem . They also spend their first matches for the Davis Cup , marking the start of a series of ten consecutive wins, and win with the Team World Cup in Dusseldorf . In singles, Seguso reaches the semifinals of the Grand Prix tournament in Stratton Mountain ( Vermont ), where he is blocked by John McInroy , and to the fourth round at Wimbledon . This success allows Seguso to enter the hundred strongest singles.
Successful performances by Seguso and Flack continue until March 1986 , and then there comes a long recession, including those associated with Seguso's injuries. At the same time, he continues to advance in the ranking of single tennis players, reaching the semi-finals of the tournament at Queen's Club in London (losing to Jimmy Connors ), then defeating Connors, at that time the third racket of the world, in the first round of the Wimbledon tournament, and then Macinroy, the eighth racket of the world at a tournament in Toronto . At the end of the season, he occupies almost the same place in the ranking in the singles (28) and doubles (16) categories.
In 1987, Seguso attempted to change partners. After a brief collaboration with Mackinaw he at the French Open at the last moment made a pair with the Swede Anders Yarrid ; [1] they won, in the final defeating the French Guy Forge and Yannick Noah , at that time the first racket of the world in doubles. Seguso and Flack reunite before Wimbledon, and Seguso wins the second Grand Slam tournament in a row and the third in his career. In September, Seguso and Flack reach the finals of the US Open, where they lose to Yarrid and Stefan Edberg . These successes allowed them to take part in the Masters doubles tournament for the second time; this time they reached the final, where they lost to Miloslav Mechirzh and Tomasz Schmid from Czechoslovakia . Focusing on paired games, Seguso again began to lose points in the ranking in singles, where at the beginning of the year he already occupied the 22nd line. By September, he had dropped out of the list of the hundred best single tennis players.
1988 was also a good year for Seguso and Flack. They won Wimbledon for the second time in a row, and then became the first Olympic champions after a long break in Seoul . They entered the Masters tournament for the second year in a row, but this time did not leave the group. In singles, Seguso also corrected his position by reaching the fourth round of the Australian Open , reaching the semi-finals of the Grand Prix tournaments twice (in Memphis and Indianapolis ) and adding to his track record a second victory over Jimmy Connors, now the sixth racket of the world. At the Olympics, he also performed in singles and reached the third round, where the future bronze medalist Brad Gilbert became on his way.
In 1989, Seguso and Flack once again reach the finals of the US Open, and in 1991 for the fourth time they are seeking the right to compete in the ATP doubles world championships, where they reach the finals, but in general their joint career is on the decline again: now Flack is already seriously injured by tearing two ligaments on his left leg, and they skip miss most of the 1990 season . In March 1992, they parted again.
The next two years, Seguso missed almost completely, and in 1995 he again paired up with Flack, but they did not manage to go beyond the second round in any tournament. Seguso spent his last professional match in 1996 at the Challenger in Eptos ( California ).
