Kernertner Theater

Theater at the Carinthian Gate in 1830

The Kernnertor Theater ( German Kärntnertortheater , Theater am Kärntnertor literally Theater at the Carinthian Gate ) is a famous Viennese theater of the 18th-19th centuries.

The first theater building was erected in 1709 according to the design of Antonio Beduzzi . For the first two years, Italian operas were staged in it, then the theater program was revised towards more popular entertainment, up to the presentation of German translations of the Italian comedy del arte . In 1752 , by decree of Maria Theresa, the theater was transferred from private control under the direct control of the Vienna Magistrate. In 1761 , the theater building burned down.

The new theater in the same place, designed by Nicolo Pacassi , opened in 1763 as the Imperial and Royal Court Theater in Vienna ( German Kaiserliches und Königliches Hoftheater zu Wien ), with a predominance of opera and ballet repertoire. Over the years, he was ruled by such outstanding personalities as Ignaz Franz Castelli and Domenico Barbaya . After the construction of the new building of the Vienna Court Opera, the theater lost its significance and closed on April 17, 1870 with the performance by Joelcino Rossini 's opera Wilhelm Tell . In its place is now the famous hotel Sacher .

Among the opera premieres that took place in the theater are Josef Haydn ’s youthful opera The Lame Demon ( 1753 ), many operas by Antonio Salieri and Ferdinand Paera , the final version of Ludwig van Beethoven ’s opera Fidelio (May 23, 1814), The Evriant by Karl Maria von Weber (October 25, 1823), the late operas of Gaetano Donizetti 's Linda di Chamuni (May 19, 1842), Maria di Rogan (June 5, 1843) and Don Sebastian of Portugal (final version, November 13, 1845), Marta Friedrich von Flotov (November 25, 1847). In addition, the 25th piano concert of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart ( March 7, 1787 ), the famous Franz Schubert song “The Forest King” ( March 7, 1821 ) and the 9th Beethoven Symphony ( May 7, 1824 ) were first publicly performed at the Kernertner Theater. .

In the 1820s, the theater was led by the famous French ballet dancer and choreographer Louis Duport . His success in Vienna was so huge that à la Duport shoes even came into fashion [1] .
