Two dialects — lumaete (other names — lumaiti, mumaite, lumara ) and leliali ( liliali ) were distinguished within the language. Linguistically close to the Buruan language and some other languages of the Seram subgroup [1] [2] [3] [4] .
It is considered virtually extinct given that the last carriers in 1995 were three elderly representatives of the Kayeli ethnic group, who, according to researchers, did not speak the Lumaete dialect quite freely [4] . The last speakers of the Lelial dialect were registered in 1989 [1] [2] .
At the same time, the Kayeli people continue to exist (according to the latest data, about 800 residents of the island of Buru consider themselves to be), however, all its representatives switched to the languages of the surrounding population, including the state language of the country — Indonesian [1] .
The most thorough studies of the Kayeli language were carried out in the 1980s - 1990s by the spouses Charles Grimes and Barbara Dix Grimes — Australian missionaries and ethnographers, active members of SIL International [5] [6] [7] .
