Kruja (region)

The Kruja district is located on the flat Ishmi river to the north of the city of Tirana and the Skanderbeg Mountains in the east, reaching more than 1,400 m in height. In the north-west the border of the district passes a few kilometers from the Adriatic coast . In the west, the flat part is bounded by a ridge of hills.

The city of Fusha-Kruja became the new unofficial center of the district. The official administrative center, the city of Kruja , is located on the slopes of the mountains high above the plain and has poor transport links. In Fusha Kruja, the roads from Tirana and Durres are united into one, leading to Northern Albania. The secondary road goes to Kruja.

Northeast of Krui is the Qafa Shtama National Park. On 2000 hectares there are several small lakes and sources. In the village of Bilaj to the west of Fusha-Kruja, on the alluvial sediments of the Ishmi River, a hot thermal spring beats with sulfurous mineral water, which also contains calcium, soda, iron, and magnesium and reaches a temperature of 55 ° C. There is also a small medical center for visitors.

Due to its proximity to the capital of Albania, Tirana (32 km) and its favorable geographical location in the center of the country, there are various industries in the region. First of all, it is the production of furniture sold everywhere.

There are several industrial enterprises in the district (a cement factory and others) built under socialism. Production of building materials is in progress.

Kruja city belongs to the most important tourist centers of Albania. Kruja Fortress was the family estate of the national hero Skanderbeg , here he led battles with the troops of Mehmed II . The old market and the fortress with its museums (the National Museum of Albania, the Ethnographic Museum) are a favorite place for tourist excursions from Tirana. Not far from Kruj, on the hill, lies the ancient Illyrian fortress Zgërdhesh.

In the south-west of the district there is the only international airport in Albania - Tirana International Airport Nënë Tereza Tirana International Airport.

The county is connected by roads with the cities of Lezha , Shkoder , Tirana , Vora and Durres . These roads are part of a four-lane autobahn under construction from Central Albania to Kosovo.

Although there is a railway line around the district, it does not connect the most important cities. Access roads lead to the industrial enterprises of the city of Fusch-Kruja.

Intercity buses run from Fush-Kruj to Tirana.

Kruja County consists of two cities: Kruja and Fuscha-Kruja and 5 communes: Bubq, Cudhi, Kodër, Thumana, Nikël.
