History
It originated at the site of the Swedish bastion, which had been laid down in the middle of the 19th century, in front of the Harjuss gates. In 1867, the Janovskaya Church was erected on the square.
In 1910, the hay market was liquidated on the square, the square was covered with stone. By the 200th anniversary of the capture of the city by Russian troops, a monument to Peter I was erected on the square. On May 1, 1922, the monument was dismantled [1] , the pedestal was destroyed under it, the legs of bronze Peter were melted down into Estonian senty [2] , and a monument to Estonian schoolchildren participating in the Liberation War of 1918-1920 was cast from bronze hands. (standing at the 2nd Real School), and the remaining bust was moved to Kadriorg , where he stood at Peter’s house (next to the current residence of the President) until the beginning of World War II , his fate was unknown.
In the 1930s, the area was built up with functionalist buildings - the House of Arts (1933, architects A. Soans, E. Kuusik), the administrative building (1932, architect R. Natus), Scandic Palace (1936, E. Lochk).
In 2009, the Victory in the Liberation War monument was erected on the square.
