Prewar Biography

Ivan Ustinovich was the third of four children in the family of a Ukrainian peasant. In 1933 , during the famine of 1932-1933 , the older sister took 15-year-old Ivan to Moscow , where he began his career at the Chkalov aircraft factory in Khimki as a joiner.

In 1938 he was drafted into the Red Army , served in the local air defense forces of the People’s Commissariat of Internal Affairs (MPVO NKVD) in the city of Zaporozhye . Just before the war began, after serving 3 years of military service, Ivan Ustinovich was supposed to be demobilized - in mid- 1941 he was the foreman of the company.

World War II

After the start of World War II, Ivan Ustinovich was sent to junior lieutenant courses. After heavy fighting in the second half of 1941, a part was sent for further formation and in July 1942 was sent to Stalingrad. With the rank of junior lieutenant, Ivan Ustinovich returned to his unit as a platoon commander.

During the Battle of Stalingrad, Ivan Ustinovich supervised mine clearance and personally cleared unexploded bombs and shells. After the liberation of Kiev , he was engaged in mine clearance of the city and central regions of Ukraine. In the archives of the National Museum of the History of the Great Patriotic War, a photograph of the destroyed Khreshchatyk with the inscription on the wooden plaque “Checked - no. Min. Lt. Harchenko ” [1] . Since September 1943, Ivan Ustinovich - a member of the CPSU (b) .

On November 2, 1944, by a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, Ivan Ustinovich Kharchenko was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the awarding of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal (No. 5573). At the time of the assignment, Ivan Ustinovich cleared more than 1,500 bombs with a caliber of more than 500 kg and more than 25,000 other explosive items.

Postwar Biography

After the war, Ivan Ustinovich continued the elimination of explosive objects. For mine clearance during the peaceful years, Ivan Ustinovich was awarded the orders of the Red Banner , the Red Star and the medal " For Military Merit ."

In 1950, Ivan Ustinovich graduated from the Higher Officer Engineering School in Moscow [2] , until 1956 he continued to personally mine, and then led the demining work and shared his rich combat experience with officers of the Civil Defense Forces.

In 1961, he commanded a battalion that eliminated the consequences of the Kurenev tragedy .

After being transferred to the reserve in 1964, Ivan Ustinovich worked in engineering positions at the Ministry of Installation and Special Construction Work of the Ukrainian SSR, and in 1986 he retired.

Ivan Ustinovich Kharchenko died on July 1, 1989 in Kiev, was buried in the Berkovetsky cemetery .

Family

In 1942 he married Nina Stepanovna Gordeeva (1926-2014). He raised his son Valentine (b. 1945-2016 ) and daughter Lyudmila (b. 1947 ). From the war years to the end of his life, he was friends with Alexander Stepanovich Bogma, his own correspondent for the newspaper Pravda.

  • 1943-1945 - 6th engineering and chemical regiment of the troops of the MPVO NKVD ( Kiev ), platoon commander.
  • 1945-1951 - 6th Engineering and Chemical Chemistry Regiment of the MPVO MVD (Kiev), company commander.
  • 1951—1955 - 3rd detachment of the MVVO MVD service (Kiev), commander of the pyrotechnic team.
  • 1955-1956 - 6th engineering and chemical regiment of the troops of the MPVO MVD (Kiev), head of the pyrotechnic service.
  • 1956-1960 - 6th engineering and chemical regiment of the troops of the MPVO MVD (Kiev), commander of an engineering battalion.
  • 1960-1962 - 120th separate engineer-chemical chemical regiment MPVO of the Kiev Military District , commander of an engineering battalion.
  • 1962-1964 - Headquarters of the Civil Defense of the Ukrainian SSR (Kiev), officer on the organization of combat training.
