Ihsan Dogramaji ( Turkish : İhsan Doğramacı ; April 3, 1915 , Erbil , Ottoman Empire - February 25, 2010 , Ankara , Turkey ) - a famous Turkish pediatrician , public figure.

Biography

Born in 1915 in the Iraqi city of Erbil in a family of Iraqi Turkmens . His father, Ali Pasha of Dogramadzhii, was the mayor of Erbil, and his maternal grandfather, Mehmet Ali Kirdar, was a member of the Ottoman parliament of Kirkuk . He graduated from the medical faculty of Istanbul University , then went through practice in one of the hospitals in Ankara . In 1949 he became an assistant professor of the medical faculty of Ankara University , and in 1954 he received the title of professor. In subsequent years, he served as rector of the University of Ankara, the Middle East Technical University, and taught at the University of Paris .

In 1967 he founded the University of Hajettepe, in 1984 - Bilkent, the first private university in Turkey.

Ihsan Dogramaji was the father of three children, the eldest son, Ali Dogramaji, is currently the rector of Ankara's Bilkent University.

He died on February 25, 2010 in the hospital of the University of Hajettepe (Turkey) as a result of multiple organ failure [3] .

Activities

From 1968, President, from 1977 to 1992 Executive Director, since 1992 Honorary President of the International Association of Pediatricians (IPA).

In 1964-1973 he was a member of the board of the Conference of European Rectors, from 1981 until the end of his life he was a member of the Board of the International Conference on Higher Education.

From 1976 to 1982 he was a member of the Executive Board of the World Health Organization , from 1959 to 1985 he was a member of the Executive Committee of UNICEF , twice elected as Chairman of the Board of this organization. From 1958 to 2003 he was president of the Turkish National Committee of UNICEF [4] .

Dogramadzhi was an honorary member of the National Medical Academy of India , France , the Academy of Pediatricians of the USA , and the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan . He was the founder of the Ikhsan Dogramadzhi Family Health Foundation within the World Health Organization [5] and the chairman of the Turkish-Azerbaijani Friendship Society.

Interesting Facts

Ihsan Dogramaji was the last to sign the Charter of the World Health Organization ( New York , 1948 ) [6] .

In 1977, during his lifetime, a book was published by British diplomat Horace Phillips, dedicated to the biography of Ihsan Dogramaci ( Sir Horace Phillips. "Ihsan Dogramaci: A Remarkable Turk" ).
