Biography

Anna Francoise Moreau was born in 1866 in a small village in the Atlantic Loire department , France . In 1890, despite the resistance of her parents, she joined the monastic congregation of the " Franciscan Missionary Mary ."

In 1898, Bishop Francis Fogoll , who was engaged in missionary activities in China, traveled around Europe, talking about the life of the Chinese Catholic Church, looking for people who wanted to go on a mission to this country. While in Turin at the International Exhibition of Chinese Culture, Francis Fogolla met with the founder of the Franciscan Missionary Mary congregation Elena Maria de Chappoten , who invited him to send several nuns to China. As a result of their meeting, a small group of priests and nuns went to the mission, among whom was St. Mary of St. Justin. While on a mission in Taiyuan, St. Justin’s Mary was engaged in catechesis , caring for the poor and orphans.

In the years 1899-1900. in China, the étuan boxer uprising took place, during which many Chinese Christians suffered. St. Justin's Maria was arrested by rebels on the orders of provincial governor Yu Xian together with a group of Catholics and sentenced to death on July 9, 1900 .

Praise

Mary of St. Justin was beatified on November 27, 1946 by Pope Pius XII and canonized on October 1, 2000 by Pope John Paul II along with a group of 120 Chinese martyrs .
