Biography

Konstantin Orbelian was born on July 29, 1928 in Armavir (according to other sources in Baku [1] [2] ) in a family of descendants of the Armenian princely dynasty Orbelian , the rulers of Syunik .

Already in early childhood, he showed musical abilities and entered the school for gifted children at the Baku Conservatory , but after his parents were repressed in 1936, he was expelled from this school and forced to work as a pianist at the Baku Institute of Physical Culture and Sports Society " Petrel . "

In 1942 he was taken as a pianist and accordionist in the military band of the 8th aviation corps. In 1943 , during a tour in Yerevan, the head of the pop band of Armenia Artemy Ayvazyan drew attention to a talented musician and invited him to his team, where from 1943 to 1952 he worked first as a pianist, and then as a conductor.

Since 1945, begins to try himself as a composer. For the orchestra, he does arrangements for folk songs and composes his own, the first of which is Lullaby.

In 1952 he entered the Musical College named after R. O. Melikyan (now the Yerevan State College of Music after R. Melikyan ), where he combined his studies with the work of accompanist at the Yerevan Opera and Ballet Theater .

In 1954 he graduated with honors from college and entered the Yerevan Conservatoire (he graduated in composition class from E. M. Mirzoyan in 1961 ).

In 1954 he organized an instrumental quintet on the radio.

In 1956, he was appointed conductor and artistic director of the State Variety Orchestra of Armenia and having worked in this position for 36 years, he became one of the leading jazz groups in the USSR [3] . He has toured with more than 40 countries around the world.

Repeatedly invited as a member of the jury to international jazz competitions.

As a composer, he combines work in the genres of modern classical and "easy" music. His symphonic and chamber works, music for theater and cinema, songs and jazz music received wide public recognition, and were awarded high international prizes. The composer actively and fruitfully works also in the genre of national-patriotic music [4] .

Member of the Union of Cinematographers of the Armenian SSR [5] .

Member of the CPSU since 1961 .

In 1992, Konstantin Orbelian left for the USA . Lived and worked in Los Angeles .

 

Died April 24, 2014. Farewell to Yerevan took place on May 11. He was buried in the pantheon of Komitas Park [6] [7] .
