Timeline
The construction of the theater was carried out in two stages:
1. During the reign of Emperor Octavius Augustus . A arena with a diameter of 90 m was built near the slope of the hill. According to the classical layout, the steps formed a semicircle, 25 fan-shaped sectors, the stalls are made of multicolor marble , the scene includes three exedra (semicircular niches) and two vaulted side entrances. We found out that among the materials of construction there are stones from the quarries of the city of Glanum (modern Saint-Remy-de-Provence ), which indicates the possibility of having extensive trade links at that time.
2. At the beginning of the II century , in the era of the emperor Hadrian . The third floor of the steps was added. Thus, the diameter of the structure reached 108 m, the theater could hold up to 10,000 spectators.
Basically, in the theater were put comedies with the use of music. This was facilitated by good acoustics: the wall behind the scene reflected the sound and directed it to the stands. Performances were given from spring to October.
The theater was discovered in the XIX century , the restoration began in 1933 .
Tourism
