Popova Island is an island in the archipelago of Empress Eugenia in the Gulf of Peter the Great, Sea of Japan , 20 km south of Vladivostok and 0.5 km southwest of Fr. Russian , from which it is separated by the Stark Strait. Named in honor of Admiral Andrei Alexandrovich Popov . On the island is the village of the same name . Population - ▲ 1,370 inhabitants (2010).

Description
Popova Island is part of the Vladivostok City District . According to the 2002 census, the population was 1316 people, lives in two villages - Stark and Popova. The area of the island is 1240 hectares or 12.4 km² [1] . The relief is characteristic of the south of Primorye . The maximum height above sea level is 158 meters. The coastline is represented by sandy and pebble beaches , alternating with rocky cliffs.
Four kilometers west of the island are the Two Brothers Islands.
There is a regular ferry service between the city and the island (problems arise in winter), a passenger ship runs [2] . Travel time is 1 hour 10 minutes. In summer, the schedule provides for additional commercial flights.
Popova Island, along with Russky Island, is a favorite vacation spot for residents of Vladivostok. There are several camp sites and recreation centers on the island, and camps are set up every summer. The best time to relax is from July to the end of September. The average water temperature in August is 22 ° C [3] .
On the island in the Alekseev Bay, the Marine Experimental Station of the Pacific Oceanological Institute named after V. I. Ilyichev of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The museum of the Far Eastern Marine Reserve has been opened.

The climate of the island is similar to the climate of Vladivostok . The average January temperature is −12.5 ° C, August +20.5 ° C.
Toponymy
Alekseeva Bay - protrudes into the northwestern coast of Popov Island. Described in 1885 by the headquarters captain of the KFSh A. A. Maltsev from the expedition of the captain of the KFSh A. S. Stenin. Then she was named in honor of the senior Kamchadal tender officer F.N. Alekseev, who died with the whole team in 1858.
Markovsky Cape - named after the hydrograph A.P. Markovsky.
Cape Andreeva - named after K.P. Andreev , who headed the Separate Survey of the Eastern Ocean in 1888-1893.
Cape Likander - named after VV Likander, who participated in hydrographic work in the Gulf of Peter the Great during his service in 1883-1887 in the Far East.

As Vokrug Sveta magazine wrote in issue 3 for 1928, "The Vladivostok branch of the geographical society wrote out several skunk specimens from America that will be put into a new nursery on Popova Island."
In the future, the master plan of the city of Vladivostok provides for the construction of a bridge connecting Russky Island and Popova Island [4] .
