Job History
Montreal was founded in 1534 . The city was part of the French colony of New France . In 1763, after a seven-year war, the lands crossed Great Britain . The creation of the post of mayor could only occur with the creation of municipal self-government [1] .
On June 5, 1833, the city council of Montreal, based on the results of the first poll in the history of the city, conducted two days earlier, established the post of mayor and appointed Jacques Viget [2] [3]. Notably: in parallel with the question of the appointment of the mayor, in the city council The law on street cleanliness was considered [1] [2] [3] .
Until 1851, the mayor was appointed by the city council, subsequently this right was transferred to a resident of the city, and the position became an elected one [4] . The first civilian-elected mayor is Charles Wilson [2] .
The mayors of Montreal often became important political figures in Canada, ranging from National Assembly deputies or Lower Canada senators ( Ademar Reynaud [5] or Henry Starns ) [6] to ministers of defense and prime ministers (Alphons Dejardin or John Abbott) [3] [6] .
In the entire history of the position, 50 mayors were replaced, some of which, after a pause, were re-elected to this position.
- Joseph Bourrét held a position in 1842–1844, 1847–1849 [7] ;
- Henry Starns held a position in 1856–1858, 1866–1868 [8] ;
- Jean-Louis Beaudry held the position in 1862–1866, 1877–1879, 1881–1885 [9] ;
- Mederic Martin held a position in 1914-1924, 1926-1928 [3] [10] ;
- Camyen Ud held a position in 1928-1932, 1934-1936, 1938-1940, 1944-1954 [6] [11] ;
- Ademar Reynaud held a position in 1936–1938, 1940–1944 [5] ;
- Jean Drapot held a position in 1954–1957, 1960–1986 [12] .
Party Affiliation
The first municipal political parties began to appear in Montreal in the middle of the 20th century [3] . Prior to this, the person holding the post of mayor could have been a member of a provincial or federal party, however, these parties did not stand for election, the mayor independently went through all the related procedures [2] .
The situation changed dramatically in the 1950s, when municipal political parties began to appear due to the growing role of the public in the megalopolis with a population of over a million. The first party, the candidate of which became the mayor, was the League of Civilian Activists, which brought Jean Drapault to power [12] . Sarto Fournier, the next mayor of Montreal, was not a member of any municipal party, which, in principle, did not prevent him from winning the election. The next election was won by Jean Drapot, but already in the composition of another party - the Civil [12] .
In 1986, the city’s administration was headed by Jean Dore, supported by the Montreal civil movement; in 1994 , Pierre Bourke, supported by the View of Montreal [13] . From 2002 to 2012, the city’s mayor was Gérald Tramblay, supported by United Montreal [14] . Liberal Denis Koder, Mayor since 2013, has registered his own urban political party, The Denis Kodera Team [15] .
Parties whose candidates became mayors
So far, no municipal party in Montreal has released more than one mayor of the city [1] . Candidates from these parties became mayors of Montreal:
- United Montreal ( Union Montreal ) [14] ;
- View of Montreal ( Vision Montreal ) [13] ;
- Civic Party of Montreal ;
- Montreal Civil Movement ( Montreal Citizens' Movement );
- Civic Action League .
Official Opposition
In many ways, the mayor of Montreal has to reckon with the Official Opposition, which appeared in 1974 . Since 1978, in dialogue with the administration, the Official Opposition has been represented by the leader of the official opposition. There have been cases when the leaders of the official opposition became mayors of Montreal.
