Character Creation
The first version of Kermit's doll was created from a green coat that belonged to Jim Henson's mother, and two ping-pong balls that became eyes. At first, Kermit was conceived as a lizard, but shortly before his performances on Sesame Street he became a frog. To look more “frog”, as well as to hide the seam between the head and body, a collar was added to him. [one]
It was rumored that the name "Kermit" appeared because of Henson's childhood friend, Kermit Scott from Mississippi. However, Karen Falk, head of the Board of Directors of the heritage of Jim Henson, categorically denies:
| Kermit was not such a rare name at the time, and Jim Henson said the frog was not named after a child from his elementary school. |
Career
Kermit is one of the leading characters of the Muppet Show , in which he acted as a director and manager. In addition to the Muppet show, the frog was a regular character in the Sesame Street puppet show and appeared in many other television shows, often as a “live” talk show guest.
He appeared on the TV screen in 1955, and from that moment until his death in 1990 he was voiced by Jim Henson himself. Kermit has a characteristic voice, often becoming the object of parodies, and a passion for singing. One of his songs, Rainbow Connection , lasted seven weeks in American Top 40 and was nominated for a Golden Globe and an Oscar in 1979.
Two books were published under the name of the frog Kermit (one of them is an autobiography), he received the degree of doctor honoris causa [2] , and he has his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame .
