Shabelnikov, Yuri Leonidovich

Born December 24, 1959 in Taganrog ^[1] .

He graduated from the Taganrog Children's Art School . The student of Leonid Stukanov ^[2] .

From 1977 to 1979 he studied at the hudgraf of the Rostov State Pedagogical Institute , which was forced to leave for political reasons. In 1979-1982 he studied at the Rostov Art College ^[1] . From 1982 to 1995 he taught painting at the Taganrog children's art school .

Since 1987 - a member of the partnership "Art or Death" ^[3] . In 1990-1991, he was a production designer at the Taganrog Drama Theater .

In 1995, he moved to Moscow . He lived and worked in the Baumanskaya 13 squat until it closed in 1998. Since 2006, he lectured and conducted master classes for students of the Free Workshops School of Contemporary Art ^[4] .

In 2007, he was included in the short list of the Kandinsky Prize in the nomination “Artist of the Year”.

In 2008, the work of Yuri Shabelnikov “Border” (2006, oil on canvas, 210x175) from the series “Requiem of Will” was sold at auction “ Sotheby's ” ^[5] .

Works with galleries Art Strelka Projects (Moscow, 2004-2009), M. Gelman (Moscow), Orel Art ( Paris ).

In 2012, he created together with Yuri Khorovsky a monument for the grave of actress Lyudmila Gurchenko ^{[6] [7]} .

In September 2012, Shabelnikov’s project “Biblical mail” was included in the Kandinsky Prize long-list in the nomination “Project of the Year” ^[8] .

In 2003, the artist Konstantin Batynkov created the work “Ilya Kabakov Helps Yura Shabelnikov to Create a Work (Art Klyazma)” (2003, 41.5x59, paper / gouache) as part of the series “My Kabakov”. The work is in the collection of the Moscow State Center for Contemporary Art .
