The Soviet Union took part in the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo ( Yugoslavia ) for the eighth time in its history, and won 6 gold, 10 silver and 9 bronze medals. The national team was represented by 99 participants, of which 25 were women. The USSR took the second team place at the Olympics. Soviet athletes won medals in 7 sports - ice skating, skiing, figure skating, hockey, biathlon (gold), sledding and for the first time in history in bobsleigh (bronze). Skier Zimyatov became the four-time Olympic champion, and the hockey player Tretyak became three-time. Skaters brilliantly performed with 9 medals. By the number of medals won, this Olympiad is still the best for sleigh riders who have won 3 awards, 2 silver and bronze. Hockey players regained the title of champions, biathletes won the baton at the fifth Olympiad in a row. Skater Malkov and skier Zimyatov brought gold and silver from Sarajevo, skater Khlebnikov and skiers Smetanina and Zavyalov won 2 silver, and skater Petrusev won 2 bronze.
