Microdontinae

Microdontinae (lat.) - a subfamily of dipterans from the family of fly flies ( Syrphidae ). All representatives are myrmecophiles . Larvae inhabit anthills , where they feed on eggs and larvae of various species of ants or collect carrion. Some species do not have functioning oral parts and do not feed in the adult stage [1] [2] . Studies of the primary structure of DNA showed that Microdontinae is a sister group in relation to all other germs [3] . Later, these findings were confirmed by studying the morphology of the larvae (Rotheray & Gilbert, 2008) [4] .
