He became known in Canada due to his expulsion from the country and his imprisonment in Syria from September 2002 to 2003 , which led to an investigation into the abuse of authority by Canadian leaders.
Facts
On September 26, 2002 at New York Airport, when he was returning to Canada from a vacation in Tunisia , the US authorities arrested him and then sent him to Syria under an extraordinary rendition, despite his Canadian citizenship. This expulsion raised many questions, as Maher Arar traveled with a Canadian passport, and the Canadian government may have deliberately ignored this fact. In addition, Syria is recognized as a country where torture is used.
Arar was imprisoned in Syria without any charge for more than one year. He subsequently alleged that during his imprisonment he was repeatedly tortured and forced to sign false confessions. On October 5, 2003 he was released after the Syrian government admitted that there was no evidence against him.
The events related to the deportation of Maher Arar were the subject of an investigation in Canada, the results of which were published on September 18, 2006 . The Canadian government admitted its mixed guilt and in January 2007 transferred Arara $ 10.5 million in compensation.
On November 2, 2009, Arara’s claim in the US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in New York against members of the then government (including John Ashcroft ) was rejected because the administration used the privilege of state secret .
