Biography
From early childhood, Mevil lived in London . He was brought up by his mother. From the age of eighteen he taught English , lived in Egypt , where he developed an interest in Arab culture and Middle Eastern politics. Mieuville received a bachelor's degree in social anthropology from the University of Cambridge , as well as a Ph.D. in international relations from the London School of Economics , where he defended his doctoral dissertation entitled “In the Clash of Two Equal Rights” [1] , in which he adapted the Marxist concept of law to the theory of international law , based on the work of Evgeny Pashukanis and critical legal theorists , and demonstrated the connection of international law with imperialism .
Policy
Mieville is a Marxist and Trotskyist , a former member of the British Socialist Workers Party and the American International Socialist Organization. In 2001 he ran for the House of Commons from the Socialist Alliance , gaining 459 votes, that is 1.2%. In January 2013, he criticized the leaders of the PSA, and in March 2013, he left the party because of disagreement with the refusal of the party leadership to condemn the perpetrator of the internal sex scandal. In August 2013, he appeared among nine signatories (among whom were Ken Loach , Michael Rosen and Gilbert Ashkar ) in the Guardian newspaper calling for the creation of a new left-wing party called the Left Unity .
His left-wing political views are reflected in his works — both artistic (including his novel Iron Council) and non-fiction (including his book October, on the Revolution of 1917) —and also theoretical views on literature (his critique of The Lord of the Rings ). Included in the editorial board of the Marxist journal « Historical Materialism » ( Netherlands ).
Creativity
The debut novel "The Rat King" can be attributed to the genre of mystical horror , Mevil later turned to the genre of fantasy steam-punk , publishing the hugely successful novels "The Station of Lost Dreams" and "Scar". In the work of the author there are elements of science fiction , fantasy and horror literature . The last of these genres includes the majority of Myvil's stories, which have repeatedly appeared in the prestigious collections Fantasy, Mysticism, Magical Realism: The Best of the Year, The Horror: The Best of the Year, and thematic anthologies. The author himself admitted that some influence on his short prose was made by Howard Lovecraft .
