Valerian was the eldest son of Gallienus and Cornelia Salonina , as well as the grandson of the emperor Valerian . The year of his birth is unknown. In 253, Valerian I appointed his grandson Caesar, and Gallienus co-ruler in August. The young emperor was sent to troubled Illyria to strengthen the power of his grandfather. Because of his youth (apparently, he was then no more than fifteen years old), Valerian II was given to study military affairs, Ingenuy , who was the governor of Pannonia and Moesia. In 257, the emperor died (according to some sources, he was killed by Ingenem).
