The city is located in the north of the province on the banks of the eponymous harbor at the mouth of the Nipisiguit River. Bathurst Harbor is the southernmost part of Chalet Bay .
The city was founded in 1652 by Nicholas Denis, originally called Nipisiguite, then St. Peters, its current name was in honor of Henry Bathurst , who from 1812 to 1827 served as Secretary of State for Military and Colonial Affairs in the government of Lord Liverpool . The status of the city has since 1912.
There are approximately equal numbers of speakers of French and English in the city [1] , 50.58% of the population speaks French only, 46.41% speak English only, and 1.94% speak only English, 1.17% speak other languages.
