History
The airline Alkan Air was established in 1977 by Barry Watson and two businessmen from Whitehorse , Win and Joey Muff. The company received its name in honor of the Alaska Highway (“Al” - Alaska, “Can” - Canada), passing through the Whitehorse. In 1987, the Maffa brothers sold their shares in the airline to another businessman, Hugh Kitchen, and the money they received from the deal was invested in the local telecommunications business.
Alkan Air began flying on two planes: the Cessna 206 equipped with floats / skis and the standard Cessna 207 . By 1987, the company stopped flights on aircraft with replaceable landing gear and opened several regular passenger flights from Whitehorse to other locations in the Yukon. By the early 1990s, however, Alkan Air gradually phased out its regular routes and reoriented itself to charter flights and air ambulance flights.
