The Embrace That Smothers is the common name for a series of songs written by Mark Jansen with the participation of Simone Simons , Ad Sluiter, Coen Janssen and Yves Huts. The songs are featured on three albums by After Forever and Epica : Prison of Desire ( After Forever ), The Phantom Agony and The Divine Conspiracy ( Epica ).
The theme of this series of songs is the danger of organized religion , but it is not anti-religious in nature. Lyrics are written both in English and in Latin (mostly prayers )
The first four songs were included in After Forever's Prison of Desire album. Their next album Decipher does not contain songs from this series. After this album, Mark Jansen quit After Forever, but continued The Embrace That Smothers in his new symphonic metal project - Epica. The next three parts of the series are released on Epica's debut album, The Phantom Agony . In 2007, the album The Divine Conspiracy released the last three songs in the series.

There are two songs in the Epica repertoire, the title of which refers to “hug” in the title: “Adyta - The Neverending Embrace” ( The Phantom Agony ) and “La'petach Chatat Rovetz - The Last Embrace” ( The Divine Conspiracy ). Despite the reference, the songs are not officially part of The Embrace That Smothers series. Nevertheless, “La'petach Chatat Rovetz” is the introduction to the VII part of The Embrace That Smothers - “Death of a Dream”, and “Adyta” - to the song “Sensorium”.
There is also a version of the song “Living a Lie”, the text of which was written by Simone Simons specifically for the show The Classical Conspiracy , but officially the song is not part of the The Embrace That Smothers series.
