Biography

The county of the Spanish mark at the beginning of the IX century

The origin of Ermenger is unknown. It is assumed that he was a noble Goth from Septimania , one of those to whom Emperor Charlemagne and his son, King of Aquitaine Louis I the Pious , at the beginning of the 9th century entrusted the administration of the border with Muslim possessions of the Frankish state . Ermenger was probably the first Earl of Ampuryas to receive this county immediately after his separation from Girona .

Ermenger is first mentioned as Count Ampourias in the Charter of Charlemagne, dated April 2, 812. In this document, the emperor ordered the counts of Septimania and the Spanish mark [1], who had arrived at his court in Aachen, to stop oppressing Gothic immigrants from Spain, reduce the state taxes imposed on them and abandon the practice of seizing the lands they owned. Control over the implementation of this decree, Charlemagne laid on the King of Aquitaine and Archbishop Arles John II . Subsequently, the emperor Louis the Pious (in 815 and 816) also gave charters in support of these migrants [2] .

In 813, Count Ermenger is mentioned as commander of the Frankish fleet, who fought with Muslim pirates in the Mediterranean . According to the testimony of the Annals of the Kingdom of the Franks , Ermenger set up an ambush on the island of Majorca , into which the fleet of the Moors fell, which had previously plundered Corsica . In battle with the Muslims, the Franks won, captured eight pirate ships and freed more than five hundred captured Christians. However, in response to this victory of the Christians, the Moors in the same year made a new attack on the Mediterranean coast of the Frankish state, during which they ravaged the cities of Nice and Civitavecchia , but were defeated in Sardinia by the local militia [3] . The attempt of the emperor Charlemagne to involve Sicily in Byzantine Patrician Muslim pirates in a joint struggle with Muslim pirates ended in failure [4] .

The exact date and circumstances of the loss by Ermenger of Ampuryas County are unknown. In 817, the governor of Roussillon Goselm was already called the ruler of this county. It is assumed that Ampuryas passed to him either after the death of Count Ermenger, or as a result of the reorganization of the counties of the Spanish brand, carried out by the emperor Louis I the Pious.
