Biography
In 1821 - 1824, the young Schirmer studied the craft of book binder in his father's workshop. In parallel, he mastered the drawing by self-taught, and since 1826 he studied at the Dusseldorf Academy of Arts with Friedrich Wilhelm von Shadov . Under the influence of the artist Karl Friedrich Lessing, Schirmer became interested in landscape painting.
Since 1834, he taught at the DΓΌsseldorf Academy, in 1839 he became a professor. Schirmer (along with Lessing) was one of the founders of the Dusseldorf School of Painting . In 1838, Schirmer made a trip to Normandy , after which in his canvases he placed more emphasis on drawing and shades of color. In 1840 he traveled to Italy, painted paintings for biblical reasons. In 1854, the artist became the first director of the newly opened Art School in Karlsruhe . In his last years, Schirmer actively used religious-biblical subjects, and his style of writing became close to the impressionist .
Among the students of I.V. Schirmer, it is worth mentioning such masters as Arnold BΓΆcklin , Hans Thoma , Oswald Aachenbach , Anselm Feuerbach , Jacob Becker , Rudolph Epp , Karl Friedrich Daker , Fritz Ebel , Michael E. Sachs , Ferdinand Keller and Karl Hoff [5 ] .
