The award was issued to all union nations that provided military support to South Vietnam from March 1, 1961 and ending with the fall of Saigon . Thus, it became the most frequently awarded Vietnamese award for foreigners after the campaign medal in Vietnam .
There are 4 degrees of the order, whose badges are added to the main medal. They correspond to the mention in the list of those presented for the award at the unit level (or those mentioned in the order).
- with a palm leaf (personal reward) (announced in the order for the army)
- with a gold star (corps order) (announced in the corps order)
- with a silver star (division order) (announced in the division order)
- with a bronze star (regiment or brigade) (announced in the order for the regiment)
Degree icons are not worn at the same time, each subsequent should replace the previous one. The award is issued in three versions, the first of which is a standard cross for courage, it can be worn by the military of all units and arms, as well as foreign allies. Other versions of the award include the Air Cross “For Courage” and the Sea Cross “For Courage” . They are considered as separate awards and, in comparison with the standard cross, can be awarded by other authorities.
This award can also be awarded to the whole unit, which distinguishes this award from others. In this case, a Vietnamese cross is awarded for courage with a palm tree. Such an award was established in 1968 , the order ribbon looks like a ribbon of the cross for courage with a metal palm icon framed by a gold frame. The award is given on behalf of the republic to any military unit that has distinguished itself so much that all its members can be awarded with personal crosses. Individual and group awards can be worn at the same time since they are regarded as different awards.
US military personnel are allowed to accept this award from March 1968 . In 1974, Army General Order No. 8 allowed each military unit serving under the military assistance command of Vietnam from 1961 to 1974 to accept this award.
The order allowed any member of the U.S. Army serving in this period in Vietnam to accept this award. This order does not apply to members of the armed forces, so they need to present an award order to receive the award.
US military personnel may be eligible for this award by making a request at, showing an award order. The award itself or the medal plate is considered as a foreign award, so that no official military service is obliged to supply it, you will have to purchase a medal yourself.
According to the rules for wearing uniforms, the US Navy personnel can only wear one Vietnamese cross for courage, (award or order ribbon), regardless of their number. You can add badges of seniority to a reward or order ribbon.
