History
Prior to the beginning of European colonization, this territory was considered by the local tribes as a "neutral zone". On certain days, representatives of these tribes came here and engaged in trade.
In the XIX century, this place was chosen for the construction of the headquarters of the private "Canada Company". April 23, 1827, St. George's Day , is the official date of the founding of the city. The city was named after the Hanover dynasty ruling in Great Britain: the ancestors of the then reigning king George IV were the Welfers family (one of the historical spellings is Guelfen); therefore, the city is also called the "Royal City".
