For the first time, Sanila is mentioned in historical sources in February 820 as a man who accused the high treason of Margrave Gothia and Count Beru of Barcelona . It is assumed that he acted as a representative of Count Goselm, who, although he was a half-brother of Bera, but had hostile feelings for it [1] . According to the Frankish chronicles, the ambassadors of the Spanish brand and earlier accused Beru of abuses and infidelity to Emperor Louis I the Pious . At a council of state in Aachen, Sanila presented the emperor with evidence of the count of Barcelona, however, since he denied all the charges against him, Louis I ruled that the truth should be established in a judicial duel between Sanila and Bera. The battle ended with the victory of the prosecutor. Chronists of contemporary events emphasize the unusual nature of the imperial court that this fight, according to the Visigoth tradition, was equestrian, while the Franks themselves fought on foot in such cases. Bera, as the loser of the battle, was found guilty and sentenced to death, which the emperor replaced with exile in Rouen . All the possessions of Bera were confiscated, and most of them passed first to the Count of Rampo , and in 826 to the younger brother of Bera, Bernard Septimansky , a friend and ally of Count Goselm. The deprivation of Count Bera of all his possessions was noted as an important event in the history of the Frankish state in several chronicles (for example, in the “ Annals of the Kingdom of the Franks ” and the work of the Astronomer “The Life of Emperor Louis”) [2] . Ermold Nigell , who wrote the poem “The Glorification of Louis” in 826, described this fight in detail, citing the pardon by the emperor Bera as an example of the extraordinary mercy of Louis the Pious [3] .
About the fate of Sanila until 834, nothing is known. It is assumed that in 832 he, following Goselm, exiled to Burgundy , to which his master was sent by Emperor Louis I for supporting the rebellion of Bernard Septimansky and King Aquitaine Pepin I. Being in exile, Goselm moved to the camp of supporters of Louis the Pious, probably hoping to obtain forgiveness from the emperor and return the possessions confiscated from him. However, this decision made him an enemy of the King of Italy, Lothar I , who at that time was at war with the supporters of his father. In 834, when Lotar took the city of Chalon-sur-Saone, Goselm, Sanila and Count Madalelm were taken prisoner and beheaded by order of the king of Italy [4] .
