Biography
Edward Rolf Tufty was born in 1942 in the city of Kansas City ( Missouri , USA ). His parents were Virginia Tufty and Edward I. Tufty. He grew up in California , in Beverly Hills , and graduated from Beverly Hills High School. Tufty earned a bachelor's and master 's degree in statistics from Stanford University and a Ph.D. in political science from Yale . His dissertation , completed in 1968 , was called the Civil Rights Movement and its Opposition. He then taught political economics and data analysis during the publication of his three political books at the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton University .
In 1975, Tufty, who lived in Princeton, was invited to teach a course of statistics to a group of journalists who attended a school of economics. He developed a course for students and lectures on statistical graphs. Later he developed this course for joint seminars with the famous scientist-statistician John Tuki, a pioneer of information design. The materials of these courses formed the basis of his first book on information design, entitled "Visual Presentation of Large Amounts of Information."
Tufty independently funded the publication of this book in 1982 , taking a second mortgage on his home. In preparing the material for the book, he worked closely with graphic designer Howard Gralla. The book was commercially successful, and its author, a research fellow specializing in political science, has become a recognized expert in information design.
Edward Tufty was invented by Sparkler .
