History
The airport was opened in 1947. Named after Cesareo Leonardo Berisso , pioneer of Uruguayan aviation. The airport includes the Uruguayan Air Force Base . Until 2012, it was a hub for the flagship airline of Uruguay PLUNA
On February 3, 2007, construction began on a new modern terminal parallel to runway 06/24. The new terminal, designed back in 2003 by the Uruguayan architect Rafael Vignoli Beseiro capable of handling 3 million passengers a year, includes a large parking lot for more than 1200 cars. This new terminal building has four mooring ramps for aircraft, separate floors for arrivals and departures, and a large observation deck on the top floor. The terminal has a margin for expansion for two additional aircraft and a maximum capacity of up to 6 million passengers per year before the building needs actual expansion. The new terminal was opened on October 5, 2009, but it only started operating at full capacity by December 29. The cost of building a new terminal amounted to 165 million dollars. The total area of construction was 45 thousand square meters. At the same time, a new cargo terminal was commissioned, the construction of which cost $ 15 million.
