Julia grew up on the shores of Lake Tahoe , she has 2 sisters: the eldest April and the younger Sarah.

Father of Julia Ciro Mankuso (born 1949), the son of Italian immigrants, was one of the largest drug dealers in US history to organize a drug cartel for the production and sale of marijuana and cocaine. In 1995, Ciro was sentenced to 9 years in prison (his term was significantly reduced due to his active cooperation with the investigation), but he was allowed to save several million dollars and land earned in the drug business. After leaving prison, Ciro maintains good relations with Julia and even helps in her ski career.

Interestingly, Julia won the World Cup for the first time after becoming an Olympic champion, and she never won the World Cup in the giant slalom that she won at the 2006 Olympics in Turin. In total, during her career she went up to the prize podium at the World Cup stages more than 30 times, winning 7 times.

During her career, she participated in seven consecutive world championships (2003-2015), in which she won two silver and three bronze medals.
