The idea to shoot a child under water came to Kurt Cobain when he and Dave Grohl watched a documentary about childbirth in water. The record company initially wanted to use a stock photo of a floating baby, but when it turned out to be too expensive, they hired photographer Kirk Weddle . Kirk's friends - Renate and Rick Eldena - allowed their son Spencer to be removed under water for a fee of $ 200. At the time of the shoot, Spencer was four months old [2] . Images of a fishing hook , fishing line and dollar bill overlaid later. Seeing the picture, Kurt and his wife Courtney Love decided that they would invite Spencer to his dinner party when he grows up [3] . Cobain’s death in 1994 did not allow these plans to materialize.
On his first birthday, Spencer received from the record company Geffen Records CD "Nevermind" (which had by then become multi-platinum ) and a teddy bear .
In 2001, ten- year- old Elden repeated his underwater photo shoot for publication in the September issue of Rolling Stone magazine , dedicated to the round date from the release of the album [4] . Elden then appeared on the cover of “The Dragon Experience” ( 2003 ), a solo album by cEvin Key , the leader of the Canadian industrial group Skinny Puppy . [5] According to Kevin, his girlfriend was Spencer's nanny and shot him for the album cover. This cover has nothing to do with the design of Nevermind , according to the idea of the photographer, her composition and Spencer's pose symbolize growing up and craving for heaven.
At the age of 14, Spencer was involved in the recording of the classic Albums: Nirvana - Nevermind documentary, released on DVD. He also appeared in the television show The 100 Greatest Albums on the British channel Channel 4 show, where he shared his interpretation of the cover design - according to him, the collage symbolizes the loss of innocence.
In an interview with New Musical Express magazine in September 2006, Elden stated that he would be interested in meeting former Nirvana musicians.
On August 16, 2007, Elden said that he felt like a real porn star , as his penis was visible on the cover of the album: “It's pretty unpleasant that so many people saw me naked. I feel like the world's largest porn star. ” [6]
On July 23, 2008, National Public Radio broadcast an interview with Elden on All Things Considered . It was recorded shortly after Spencer graduated from high school in Los Angeles. [7]
Elden is an artist and a big fan of Shepard Fairy 's work; his works are in Fairy Obey Giant's studio. [eight]
In 2008, Elden was paid $ 1,000 for another repetition of an underwater photo shoot; the picture was published in Esquire magazine. [9]
In 2016, on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of Nirvana's "Nevermind" album, Elden repeated an underwater photo shoot. He wanted to star naked, but the photographer preferred Spencer to be in swimming trunks. [ten]
