In August 1167, the father of Giomard Herve I revolted along with Viscount de Poroet Ed II , Viscount de Thoir Geoffrey IV and the tacit support of the King of France Louis VII . [1] After negotiations with Louis, King of England Henry II Plantagenet led the campaign against Viscountry Leon. In August 1167, Giomar III was defeated and captured, while the main castles of Herve and his son were destroyed. [2] Herve died shortly afterwards, in 1168 . Giomar became Viscount of Leon.

Like his father Herve, Giomard tried to defend the independence of the de facto Viscountry of Leon, freeing him from the rule of the main overlord , the duchy of Brittany , as well as from the influence of the kings of England. His rule was based on constant uprisings in order to achieve independence. In particular, he sought to protect his economic interests, including by declaring that he had a gem acquired as a result of a shipwreck and valued at 100,000 solid . [3]

In 1169, Giomard raised a new rebellion, and Henry II called on the Duke of Brittany Conan IV , who also owned Treasure to suppress the riots in the Viscountry of Leon. The campaign of Conan against Giomar began in 1170 , and Conan, having defeated him only once, did not achieve the conquest of the risen Viscount. After Conan's death in February 1171 , Giomar revolted again, and Henry, who was leaving Pontorson , led a campaign against him, which led Giomar to the loss of his castles, all of which were destroyed, and only three passed into the hands of Henry. [4] The trial of Guyomar took place in May in Ponterson. [4] Henry ordered Giomaru to return all the lands confiscated earlier from his neighbors or vassals, or to appear before the royal court.

On January 25, 1171, Giomar committed the assassination of his younger brother, Aymon, Bishop Leon. According to Robert de Torigny , Aimon was previously appointed by Guyomar to this post, but then quarreled with him. [3] A parallel is drawn between this murder and the death of Thomas Becket in 1170 , in which he was charged with Henry, who needed to act decisively in order to free himself from the charges of killing a cleric. [3]

In August 1177 , the son of Heinrich, Duke of Brittany, Geoffrey II Plantagenet , at the request of his father, led the campaign against Guyomar, who again rebelled. [5] Giomar presented his lands to Henry, but in April 1179 he again raised an uprising, which was already the last. Geoffrey again went against him, but, being tougher this time, confiscated the entire Viscountry, adding him to the duchy of Brittany. [5] Giomar agreed to go on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem , but died the same year.

The sons of Giomar, Giomaru IV and Herve II (III) , were allowed to control small parts of the confiscated Viscountry.
