Biography

Nibelunga calls the son of Hildebrand the successor of Fredegar [1] . After the death of his father, Nibelung probably inherited part of his possessions in Burgundy .

The Nibelung, like his father, Hildebrand, showed interest in continuing the Fredegar Chronicle. Under his auspices, chapters 34–54 were written describing the events of 753–768 [1] .

Probably it was Nibelung who was the count mentioned in the acts of the Horz monastery in 762 and 770 . According to one of the acts of the monastery of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, Nibelung owned the Villa Marolles-sur-Cienne. However, in 786, the owner of the villa was named a count named Obert. This gave reason to believe that Nibelung died before this year [2] .

Family

In modern historical sources he does not mention whether the Nibelung was married and whether he had children. However, later mentioned are the counts bearing the names Nibelung and Hildebrand, which could well be descendants of Nibelung I. According to the hypothesis of Christian Settipani [2], the sons of Nibelung I could be:

  • Nibelung II (c. 750/760 - after 805), Señor Perrasi and God, Count Esbe, Count Madri
  • Hildebrand II (c. 760/770 - after 796), seigneur Perrasi and Gods, royal governor of Otenua in 796
