John George Diefenbaker ( born John George Diefenbaker ; September 18, 1895 , Newstadt , Ontario - August 16, 1979 , Ottawa , Ontario ) - Canadian politician and statesman, lawyer. Leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada (1956-1967). The 13th Prime Minister of Canada in 1957 - 1963 , since 1969 Chancellor of Saskatchewan University .

Political career

In 1929 he was appointed royal adviser. Leader of the Conservative Party of Saskatchewan ( 1936 - 1940 ).

In 1940, he was elected to the House of Commons from the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada. Three times he was a rival to the party leadership at conventions in 1942 , 1948 , and in 1956 he headed it.

In 1957 , when conservatives won the federal election and formed a minority government , Dieffenbaker took over as prime minister of Canada. In 1958, Dieffenbaker's party won the federal election , and he formed a majority government.

In 1957 and 1959, for several months at the same time as Prime Minister, he served as Minister of Foreign Affairs .

During his administration, Dieffenbaker canceled the Avro Project CF-105 Canada Arrow and purchased US-made military aircraft, a controversial decision in Canadian history.

Among the significant achievements of Dieffenbaker as Prime Minister:

In 1963, Dieffenbaker lost the federal election to Lester Bowles Pearson , a representative of the Liberal Party of Canada .

After completing a political career

Dieffenbaker resigned as leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada in 1967 , but remained a member of Parliament until his death in 1979 .

In 1969, he became rector of Saskatchewan University and held this position until his death.

Interesting Facts

John Diefenbaker is the only Prime Minister of Canada whose mother tongue was neither English nor French. His first language was German.
