Biography

Born on April 26 ( May 8 ), 1824 in the Kostroma province .

He studied at the private boarding house of L. I. Chermak and at the Kostroma gymnasium . In 1843 from the Demidov Lyceum entered the law faculty of Moscow University [1] , after which in 1850 he began serving in the Moscow Palace Office ; was an assistant director, and then a long time director of the Armory . In the late 1850s, he was the censor at the Moscow Post Office .

He began writing in 1859 as a fiction writer. Contributed to the founding in 1874 of the Society of Russian Dramatic Writers (for some time, since 1887, was the chairman of this society); was a member of the Society of lovers of Russian literature .

After A.N. Ostrovsky’s death, from the autumn of 1886 N.A. Chaev was the head of the repertoire in Moscow theaters.
