Biography

Karen Magnussen was born and raised in Vancouver. She first performed in public at the age of six. [5] Magnussen achieved national recognition by winning the Canadian Junior Championship in 1965 and taking fourth place in the “adult” championship four years later. At her first world championship in 1967, she became the twelfth. The breakthrough occurred in 1968, when the leader of the Canadian figure skating team Petra Burka graduated from a sports career. [5] This year, Magnussen became the champion of his country for the first time and took seventh place at the Winter Olympics in Grenoble . Then the skater was only 15 years old. [6] The following year, the athlete was able to become only the second in the Canadian Championship. Before the World Cup, Magnussen suffered from unbearable pain in her legs, and after a medical examination it turned out that the skater was seriously injured. According to doctors, there was no question of returning to the sport, however, the athlete was able to return to the ice. [7]

A year later, she again became a national champion and won the first medal of the world championships - bronze. [5] Magnussen proved to be a good all-rounder - she performed the required figures and the free program at the highest level. [7] She represented the country at the 1972 Olympics , being the standard bearer of Canada. There Magnussen climbed to the second step of the pedestal. In 1972, she took second place in the World Cup . After the 1973 World Cup, in which the figure skater won, she completed her amateur career and went into professionals. Until 1977, she performed with the Ice Capades show. [5] Then Magnussen moved to Boston , where she took up coaching. [5] She continued the same activity after the return of Vancouver, where she still lives. [8] She founded the Karen Magnussen Foundation, a support fund for young skaters. [five]
