History

The community got its name from two historical settlements of the southern Tutchone: Champaign on the banks of the Desadish River and Eishihik in the north of Lake Eishihik . The community’s original lands are located in the southwestern part of the Yukon Territory and in the northwest of British Columbia. In the indigenous territory of the community are the Clwain National Park and the Tatshenshini Alsek Provincial Park . [6]

The South Tutchone language belongs to the group of Atabaskan languages, however, the residents of the community maintained relations with neighboring tribes and were often bilingual. The second language was tlingit [7] . Currently, it is owned by only a few people in the community [6] .

The community was one of the first to sign a self-government agreement in 1995. According to the final agreement, the Champaign and Aishihik community received 2,427 km² of land from the Government of Canada and about 28 million CAD compensation paid over 15 years [7] .
