Life and Activities
In 1927 he graduated from the University of Wisconsin , then taught at this university.
From 1928 he worked as an engineer in the laboratories of Bell .
In 1932 he discovered cosmic radio emission. Studying atmospheric radio interference in the meter-wave band (14 m) at the Holmdelsky test site of Bell, he discovered a constant radio noise of unknown origin, the source of which he identified in April 1933 with the Milky Way .
In May 1933, he published an article in the New York Times stating that "stellar noise" had the greatest intensity when the antenna was directed to the central part of the Milky Way. Jansky's work did not find a response either among radio engineers or among astronomers, and in 1938 he stopped research related to cosmic radio emission. He continued to study radio interference and radio wave propagation in the earth’s atmosphere, as well as the development of microwave radio equipment.
Died at the age of 44 from heart failure.
Memory
Since 1966, the honorary Lecture of Karl Jansky has been awarded. The non-sys tem unit of measurement of the spectral density of the radiation flux, Jansky and a crater on the moon, is named in his honor.
