History
It is believed that German rex comes from a curly-cat named Kater Munk, who lived in the 1930s and belonged to the family of a certain Erna Schneider, who lived in East Prussia [2] in a village near Königsberg (now the Russian city of Kaliningrad ). His parents were cats of Russian blue and Angora smoky ("smokey") colors. The breed has been recognized by most felinological organizations, including FIFe , WCF and SCFF . In most federations, including the CFA , German Rex is put in the same ring with the Cornish Rex and Devon Rex breeds [1] . Also, CFA has long considered cats of this breed to be a breed of Devon Rex.
There is another version of the origin of cats of this breed. The first documentary evidence of it relates to a story that occurred in 1951. Then Rosa Scheyer-Karpin, a doctor from East Berlin, picked up a young black cat with curly hair on the street. In 1957, in the progeny of this cat, which received the nickname Lammhen ("Lamb"), two curly kittens appeared, which became the founders of the breed. In the 80s of the XX century, a breeder from Essen, Annelisa Hackmann, found a stray rex cat on the island of Lanzarote (Spain). She used it to mate with her cats. [3]
The breed was first recognized in 1982, the German Rex breed was recognized by the FIFe international federation, but still remains not very popular.
