The river is divided into four hydrological regions [4] :
| No. | Title | original name | Area of the region, km 2 | Total catchment area, km 2 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| one | Upper Cauca | Alto cauca | 5451 | 5451 |
| 2 | Valle del Cauca | Valle del Cauca | 19349 | 24800 |
| 3 | Middle Cauca | Cauca medio | 19750 | 44550 |
| four | Lower Cauca | Bajo cauca | 18750 | 63300 |
Water consumption in the middle reaches of the river, at the La Virginia water meter station, is 531 m 3 / s [4] .
