Life
After studying in Bonn , Berlin and Göttingen, Hartlaub received his Ph.D. in medical sciences in 1838. In his subsequent trips, he began in 1840 with the collection and research of exotic birds, which he bequeathed to the Museum of the Society of Natural History in Bremen. Already in 1844, the collection covered approximately 2,000 copies. Hartlaub first described several species of birds. In 1852, Hartlaub, together with his assistant Jean Louis Cabanis, founded the Journal of Ornithology, to this day the leading German-language magazine in its field.
In 1857, after a trip to Africa, Hartlaub published his main work, The Ornithology System of West Africa, in which he described 758 species of birds. In 1860, the "Systematic Review of Madagascar Birds" was published. He supported Friedrich Hermann Otto Finsch (1839-1917) in his work on the bird world of Polynesia .
Relatives
Hartlaub's father - Karl Friedrich Ludwig Hartlaub (1792-1874) - was a wealthy merchant in Bremen. He later became a senator in Bremen. His mother was Johannes Elizabeth Hartlaub, educated and possessing artistic flair, nee Buch (1785-1874), who contained a literary salon in her house. She was the daughter of Bremen pastor Philip Ludwig Buch. Both were married in 1813. In the period from 1814 to 1823, the mother gave birth to five children. Hartlaub's only sister was Lina Carolina Elizabeth Dorothea von Isendeher.
On June 9, 1844, Hartlaub married Karolina Stachov in Bremen. Their son Clemens followed in the footsteps of his father and also devoted his life to science [1] .
