(70) Panopea ( lat. Panopaea ) is an asteroid of the main belt , which belongs to the dark spectral class C and is a member of the family Evynomii . It was discovered on May 5, 1861 by the German astronomer Hermann Goldschmidt with the help of a 4-inch telescope located on the sixth floor of his apartment in the Latin Quarter of Paris , and is named after Panopea , the daughter of Nerea in ancient Greek mythology . The name was suggested by the British astronomer Robert Man - President of the British Royal Astronomical Society [6] .
