The Republic of China , in reality representing only the island of Taiwan , took part in the 1972 Summer Olympics , but did not win any medals. In protest at the usurpation of the name "China" by Taiwan, the People's Republic of China boycotted these games. Under pressure from the PRC, the IOC decided that in the future the Republic of China will participate in the Olympics called “Chinese Taipei”.
