Work

Assistant mathematician at Princeton University (1946-1948).

Associate Professor of Mathematics, Stanford University (1948-1952).

Researcher, RAND Corporation (1953-1965).

Professor at the University of Southern California (1965-1984).

Got numerous results related to the use of dynamic programming in different areas of mathematics (calculus of variations, automatic regulation, approximation theory, operations research, etc.). In 1979, he was awarded the IEEE Medal of Honor "for his contribution to the theory of decision-making processes and the theory of systems management, especially for the creation and application of dynamic programming" [4] .

In the calculus of variations, the functional Bellman equation plays an important role. In mathematical methods of optimal control, the Bellman function , the Bellman equation , the Hamilton – Jacobi – Bellman equation are known. Published 619 articles and 39 books. Many of his works have been translated into Russian.
