Creation History
By the end of the 1960s, the GRU of the USSR Ministry of Defense was tasked with creating a silent pistol, more accurate than the PB . The Stechkin pistol was proposed as a basis, as a weapon already evaluated by special units. Among the requirements was to ensure silent or low noise shooting, as well as replace the bulky wooden holster-butt with a soft holster and develop a light detachable butt [7] . Development was conducted at TsNIItochmash under the leadership of A. S. Neugodov. In 1972, development under the working index AO-44 was tested and was adopted under the name Automatic Silent Pistol (APB) [1] [2] .
Design Features
The APB pistol is not much different from a conventional APS: like the APS, the automatic control system is based on the principle of recoil of the free shutter, the trigger mechanism is trigger, the trigger is open, an inertial retarder is located in the handle to reduce the rate of fire. The barrel APB is elongated by 21 mm compared to the APS and protrudes from the bolt frame for quick installation of a silencer; the rigid holster-butt is replaced by a fabric holster and a removable wire butt. The barrel has 2 groups of holes: near the chamber and closer to the barrel, designed to divert part of the powder gases [2] directly into the first chamber of the muffler, which reduces the speed of the bullet to 290 m / s [7] .
The muffler has 4 expansion chambers and a groove system that allows you to quickly install and dismantle it. The silencer is fastened with a latch [6] . The use of a silencer was foreseen as a forearm , although when conducting automatic fire, heating made it difficult to hold a silencer for a shooter without gloves [7] .
The stock is made of wire and arranged so that the fulcrum is higher than that of the wooden butt of the APS. This allows you to reduce the tossing of weapons during the return, thereby increasing accuracy [1] . The first stock options had a smooth butt plate; on the later for convenience of the shooter, “teeth” were made on the butt plate, excluding the butt sliding on the shoulder during automatic fire [7] .
Usage
The APB pistol came into service with special forces in the USSR, later it was used by special forces of the former Soviet republics [1] . The gun was widely and successfully used during the conflict in Afghanistan , as well as in local conflicts in the territory of the former USSR [1] .
Often, a gun with attached butt and silencer was used as the main weapon and was worn on the shoulder strap [6] .
Ratings
Muffling the sound of a shot from the APB was considered insufficient to ensure complete stealth, however, the gun is still popular with fighters of special forces due to the increased characteristics of firing accuracy compared to APS, which are provided with a lower ballistic pulse of the shot [1] [7] .
