Structure

 

The National Assembly is unicameral and consists of 350 deputies elected by direct, secret and equal ballot on the majority system for 5 years, 50 [k 1] seats in which are reserved for women elected based on party affiliation in accordance with the received share of the vote [1] [ 2] [3] [4] .

A Bangladeshi citizen who has reached the age of 25 years may become a deputy [5] .

Parliament is led by the speaker, who is elected by the parliament at the first meeting; since February 29, 2015, this post has been occupied by [1] [4] .

Authority

The National Assembly exercises legislative power in the Republic of Bangladesh, making all decisions by a simple majority vote [4] [5] .

The legislative initiative is drawn up by the bill and submitted to the parliament, in case of consideration by the parliament, it is transferred to the president for signature, which takes 15 days. If the president refused to sign the bill, he will be returned to parliament, where he is being considered taking into account the president’s amendments and, if adopted for the second time without any changes, the president must sign the bill within 7 days, after which the bill becomes law [4 ] [5] .

The National Assembly has the exclusive right to assign taxes, as well as the right to issue a decree giving authority to any authority or person to issue legal acts of regulatory significance [5] .

Interaction with other branches of government

The president is elected by the parliament, his responsibilities include the convening of the National Assembly, the announcement of a break in work and the dissolution of the parliament by public statement. At the request of the president, the prime minister is obliged to submit any issue to parliament. If the president and the parliamentary majority disagree on any issue, the head of state may be removed from office. The president has the right to dissolve the parliament only at the suggestion of the prime minister, as a rule in case of loss of support for the parliamentary majority and unwillingness to resign [4] [5] .
