The first name of the program is Eudora Welty [2] .

In 1991, the rights to the program were acquired by Qualcomm , which divided the program into two options: Eudora Lite with a freeware license and Eudora Pro with a commercial license. At the same time, Qualcomm attracted to the further development of the creator of the program and his colleagues. [2] [3] In 2003, Qualcomm began offering Eudora Pro with a sponsored license ( adware ).

Since 2006, the Pro version is no longer available. The latest commercial version for MacOS is 6.2, for Windows 7.1.

In 2006, version 8.0 was converted into an open source project based on Mozilla Thunderbird and named Penelope , then renamed to Eudora OSE (Eudora Open Source Edition).

In 2010, development was discontinued, in 2013 Eudora OSE was declared obsolete and users were encouraged to upgrade to Mozilla Thunderbird.

In 2018, Qualcomm transferred the source code, trademark, eudora.com/eudora.org domains, and all rights to one of Eudora's oldest graphical email clients to the Computer History Museum . The museum also received the right to relicense the code and publish it under the BSD license . Before publication, the code was cleared from the use of obscene vocabulary in the comments, which was one of the conditions for opening the code. Third-party proprietary components were also removed from the code, Qualcomm has no rights to open them [4] .
