David Barnett (according to other sources - Jeffrey Barnett , b. 1933) - cryptographer of the US Embassy in Bogota , an agent of Soviet intelligence since the 1970s.
Biography
Born in 1933. In 1955 he graduated from the University of Michigan. He worked at the CIA as an analyst since 1958. Since 1965 - in the Operations Department. Since 1967 he worked under diplomatic cover in Indonesia. His tasks included the recruitment of Soviet employees. As a result of the US operation “ Khabrink ”, a large amount of documentation and part of the USSR’s armaments, which were supplied to Indonesia before the 1965 military coup there, fell into the hands of intelligence.
In 1970, he resigned from the active service of the CIA, but continued to work under the contract. He returned to Indonesia and opened a shrimp factory, after - he began to export furniture. However, by 1976, Barnett had accumulated debt of $ 100,000.
In October 1976, through the Soviet embassy in Jakarta, he offered his cooperation to the intelligence of the USSR. He handed over to the KGB officer the details of Operation Khabrink, as well as the information he knew about US counterintelligence operations, the CIA in Indonesia, and the planned recruitment of employees of the Soviet embassy in Surabaya . At the suggestion of Soviet intelligence, and after a number of trips to Washington, Barnett liquidated his business in Indonesia and returned to the United States in April 1978, and since January 1979 he has again been employed by the CIA as a temporary contract officer. His responsibilities included training new agents.
In total, while working for Soviet intelligence, he received $ 92,600. It was issued in 1979 by Vladimir Piguzov . Arrested on March 18, 1980. He was sentenced on October 24, 1980 (according to other sources - January 8, 1981 ) to 18 years in prison. He was released on bail in 1990 .
