Macmillan Provincial Park - Provincial Park on Vancouver Island in British Columbia , Canada .

The 301-hectare park is located 25 km west of Qualicum Beach and 16 km east of Port Alberni , highway 4 through the park passes through the park . The park is located on the western shore of Lake Cameron ( Cameron ), and protects the Cameron River Delta ( Cameron ).

In the park grows the famous forest of ancient pseudo-suds known as Cathedral Grove , attracting visitors from all over the world. Some of the trees are over 800 years old, 75 m high and 9 m wide.

The flora of the park is typical for the region, to the south of the highway thuja folded and large-leaved maples grow. The undergrowth includes small-leaved blueberries , salal ( gaulteria ), bristled lure . Several species of birds live in the park, including owls and woodpeckers ; as well as mammals - baribals , wapiti and cougars . Different types of trout are found in the river and Lake Kemeron.

Cathedral Grove was a popular place long before the creation of the park. It was part of the forest land of the timber merchant H.R. Macmillan . In 1944, he donated 136 hectares of land to the provincial government. Three years later, in 1947 , a class A provincial park was created on this territory.

Parking Debate

In 2003, the provincial council planned to build a parking lot to service the park. However, this was met by protests from environmental groups. In its current state, the park is visited by more than a million people annually, for which there are parking lots on the side of the road. Government officials say that because of this, the safety of tourists is at risk, and they want to build a new car park. Current plans include the creation of a 5-hectare parking lot one and a half kilometers from the park. Critics argue that construction will reduce the number of visitors to the park and will threaten the habitat and fodder land of the local wapiti population. In May 2004, construction was suspended due to a protest organized by an association of environmental groups.
